Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The Pioneer KURO PDP-6010FD is a 1080p plasma television featuring an exceptionally bright and clear 60-inch screen, one of the larger sizes available among consumer models. With a 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen, this television would be an ideal centerpiece for a home theater system in a large room.

The KURO PDP-6010FD has the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels for the most detailed picture available. View larger. View product details.

Connect a flash drive with the built-in slot and view photos on the large screen. View larger.
Outstanding Video Performance With a screen as large as this, high resolution becomes more important because it is more possible to view each pixel from a distance. The PDP-6010FD is a native 1080p display, meaning it has a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the highest standard available. The black levels on plasma screens are generally superb and this unit is no exception, with blacks that are an intense, deep black and a picture that has very high contrast as a result.

The display features Pioneer's new ASIC video processing and scaling, which upconverts standard definition and other video resolutions for viewing at 1080p. A variety of noise reduction circuitry ensures a distortion-free picture at all times. Users can manually adjust the color temperature, gamma, and the levels of noise reduction circuitry and filters to fine tune the picture to their exact specifications.

An optical light sensor automatically adjusts the picture for optimal viewing depending on the ambient light in the room, compensating for night and day and for the content of the video, such as sports, movies, or news. The PDP-6010FD also has a film mode that eliminates motion judder and provides smoother playback of film content.

The PDP-6010FD is capable of remembering six picture settings for various A/V selections, with Movie, Game, Standard, Dynamic, and Optimum modes, as well as a user-defined preset. You can also set one of five aspect ratio presets in case you're watching standard-aspect 4:3 television. The television can also be set to auto-size when zooming is necessary.

Connections for all your Components
The PDP-6010FD has a large complement of inputs, including four independent HDMI 1.3 inputs (two with analog audio). Additionally, it has two component inputs, three composite inputs, and one S-Video input. There is a USB connection that can connect a storage drive for viewing of photos. A built-in CableCard slot enables the PDP-6010FD to work with cable services without an extra decoding box. An ATSC and two NTSC tuners are built in and fully integrated for use with picture-in-picture and picture-side-picture modes. The television has outputs for Dolby Digital/PCM, audio, subwoofer, SR+, and headphone. The TV Guide On-Screen programming guide is included as well.

Breathtaking Audio
The PDP-6010FD features a detachable bottom speaker with an integrated digital amplifier that improves the clarity and accuracy of the sound. The amplifier provides 17 watts of power for the two-way speakers and supports SRS WOW/FOCUS/TruBass surround sound.

The PDP-6010FD is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

This Plasma Rocks!!!

Review Date: September 2, 2007
Reviewer: E. Marzano, New York
I had been waiting for the Kuro line of plasma panels to arrive, and about a month ago, the 50" 720p unit went on display at the local stores. It clearly had deeper blacks than anything else on the wall, and the screen was among the best in rejecting room reflections.

On this first impression, I pre-ordered a PDP-6010 (60" 1080p), and it arrived two days ago. What can I say? It is better than I had hoped for. The last unit I had the pleasure of viewing was a new Samsung plasma, and it's great, but this is the next level. Reflections are muted and unobtrusive, even in a brightly lit skylight illuminated room. False contouring has been reduced, especially in HD. But what makes this TV stand out is the shadow detail. This technology has brought shadow details and reflective images into a new era.

A few unexpected and pleasant surprises: 1) The unit has a beautiful acrylic surround/bezel. Really sharp and you don't see it in the photos.
2) Made in the USA!
3) Subwoofer output. I threw out the surround sound mess; no more extra wires, speakers and confusing remote. Just kept the powered subwoofer (not Pioneer brand), attached it to the new set and have GREAT sound that's simple and simple. No, it isn't full surround sound, but it is very clean and more than loud enough. Our family members can all operate it without incident, which is an improvement.

The only down side: You must assemble the stand and speaker bar to the unit. This is not complicated, but definitely requires two strong people and a LARGE table with a clean, protective sheet or blanket. Even if you hire someone to do this, you'll need the table for them to do it. Can't be done on the floor. Wouldn't risk using the couch. A bed could be suitable.
My faith in plasma has been restored. It doesn't get any better than this.

I've always been a fan of LCD flat panels and rear-projections but I'm glad I've taken a small leap of faith to try a technology that I've always been skeptical of (burn-in issues, pressure-sensitive buzzing). After exhaustive research online at various forums and visits to see floor models at stores accompanied by chats with knowledgeable sales people, it wasn't hard to come this decision. It looks like plasma has come a long way and sets like this Pioneer Kuro are the epitome of this technology. The blacks, the colors, the contrast, the overal picture quality, are astounding and has met and in some ways exceeded the very high expectations I've already set for myself on this TV from all the online research I've done and glowing reviews I've read. This is certainly better than the any LCD I've ever had and even the latest crop of 120Hz Sony's and Samsungs that came to market.

Ordering this from Amazon turned out to be another excellent decision. Not only was it the best price, but it was comforting to know that Amazon was an authorized Pioneer dealer with an excellent return policy to boot. The TV arrived via EGL "white glove" delivery in record time (I ordered on a monday and it was delivered the following saturday!) It was brought up to my apartment, unpacked from the box and foam, and the stand was assembled on the spot. This was the best delivery experience I've ever had despite the fact that it was one of the largest and seemingly fragile. I'm glad Amazon uses EGL because they are truly a top notch and service-oriented company based on this experience.

Do I have anything bad to say about the TV? Not really. I can go on and on about how great it is but it won't be any different than what's already been said on the reviews you see online and on forums. But if I had to be nitpicky, I'd have to say that I wish the included stand was height-adjustable for when the user decides not to install the speaker when using a multi-channel setup. Without the speaker, the TV looks too perched-up with an exposed area beneath that is not very esthetic. The "Elite" version (PRO-150FD) has the shorter stand and from my understanding, will fit the PDP-6010FD but Pioneer wants $400 for one. There is also a slight buzz in my unit but it's very minor and to be honest, it's not any worse than most plasmas I've heard. Even low volume drowns it out so it was not a big issue. Perhaps I have just become accustomed to the many buzz-free LCD panels I've had. None of these nitpicks warrant detracting from the 5 stars I will give this TV.

One word of advice when you get this TV and plan on using it for gaming and viewing sources with lots of static images or aspect ratios that don't fill the whole screen: do a proper break-in. Yes this TV has an orbiter and all the new technology that prevents "burn-in" but regardless, image-retention can still be an issue even with the newest plasmas despite what some store sales person might tell you. If you do a search on the web, you will be able to find a free downloadable "plasma break-in dvd" that you burn on a dvd-r. The one I use runs for 24 hours and the recommended break-in is 100-150 hours. I've done the break-in and frequently play PS3 and Xbox 360 games and often view movies with 2.4:1 aspect ratios and standard definition 4:3 programming with the black side bars, and at least so far, no issues and none expected since the break-in was done properly.
Best of The Best!

Buying this TV was my first step into the realm of HD and if you've done any homework on this model, you'll find that it's pretty universally praised as the best flatscreen TV currently on the market. Believe me when I say that this TV lives up to the hype of anything and everything you may have read. It took 2 tries before I got a working model to my doorstep (see my freight shipping company rant at the end of the review), but once I had this TV fired up, all I can say is I was in absolute mouth-breathing awe. (and I hate mouth breathers!) From the jaw-dropping perfect picture clarity to colors so vivid they defy explanation, for me to say that this TV exceeded my expectations would be the understatement of the decade. Compared to any other flatscreen TV I've seen, the Kuro is bordering on reverse-engineered alien technology! If, like me, you upgrading from a standard definition set to this TV, regardless of the quality of your current TV (mine was a Sony WEGA, which we loved), this is about the equivalent of going from driving an rusty old Datsun with a rag for a gascap (for the Sandler fans) to upgrading to a Ferrari.

I was watching some of the island scenes from "Castaway" from an upscaling Sony DVD player on this TV and the color and clarity was so mindblowing, there were scenes that almost looked like they were jumping off the screen in 3-D. I also popped in Dream Theater's "Score" DVD, a concert that my wife and I attended live, and it was like being there at Radio City Music Hall all over again.

As just about every review you've seen here will attest, you pretty much can't go wrong with this TV and it's about as user friendly as can be even for the not-so-technically inclined. About my only complaint from that dynamic are all 4 HDMI ports being on a bottom panel in the back of the TV and a little tough to connect unless you're looking directly up at them. If you can afford it though, the Kuro is worth every penny and buying on Amazon saved me $2000 off retail and $1,000 off even the lowest local store price I could find.

Just as an aside having nothing to do with the TV itself, Amazon needs to seriously explore other freight shipping options as they currently use Eagle Logistics exclusively for freight and based on my experience with Eagle, they just plain suck at what they do. White glove service it certainly wasn't in my case. The local warehouse told me that they only have one 2-man team for larger shipments and it took them a full week to schedule delivery in my case (even after the 5 day wait for it to arrive at the local warehouse) and on the date we scheduled, they informed me that they would deliver between 10 am and 2 pm...The "2-man team" ended up showing up at 5:00 pm that day in the form of ONE man, so I had to help unload the truck. On the first delivery, we pulled out the screen only to find that it had spider cracks all the way across it as though someone had either dropped the box from about 3 feet in the air a couple of times or some warehouse guys took turns doing target practice on the box with a sledge hammer. I don't where it got mishandled, but someone had done a number on this thing. Fortunately, the second time was the charm, but they still couldn't schedule the 2-man team until a week after the shipment arrived locally, so we had them send a one man truck and helped him unload it again. Eagle also does not offer expedited delivery, so count on a week plus for these guys to get anything to your doorstep and don't be surprised when Larry, Darryl and Darryl show up minus Larry and Darryl.

Performs up to expectations

After flip flopping between this TV and the Samsung 63" and doing ton of research on avsforum. I decided to go with the Pioneer. No regrets. The TV itself is beautiful. Watching Planet earth via Blu-ray is jaw dropping. You have to mount the speakers when using the stand because if you don't, you'll have two ugly posts in between the stand and the screen. After mounting the speakers, the TV looks pretty sharp, not as sharp as the Elite where the speakers are side mounted, but good enough for the price. No dead pixels and only a slight buzzing, about the same as my 50" panasonic. Blacks are pretty amazing compared to the Panasonic, kuro techonology definately isn't just hype. Delivery was pretty smooth, Amazon had the incorrect phone number on file, so i'd suggest you call them and verify they give the delivery company the correct information. The tracking number was also incorrect but calling the shipping company had it resolved in 15mins. Actual delivery and setup went very smooth, the two guys hung around until we had the stand put together and TV powered up. Overall very satisfied, especially being able to save $2000+ compared to Bestbuy.
Best Picture but bad warranty service

I rated the 60" Kuros strictly on the quality of the picture. I purchased a PDP-6010 FD Kuro and a PDP-5010 FD Kuro. The quality of the picture is incredible. However, My PDP-6010 FD failed after only 9 weeks of use. Service technicians have been working on it since Mar 22, 2008 and today is Apr 4, 2008 and they still haven't fixed it. I think they are slowly rebuilding the set in my den. I had to remove the Plasma (at some expense) from my wall before the technicians would do warranty work. Beware of Pioneer warranty service. I am still trying to get my Plasma fixed. And then I will have to pay someone to put it back on the wall.

This monitor is one of the best flat panels available. The smaller 500M is rumored to have some 10G KURO technology which makes it produce a slightly deeper black. But the size difference was a no-brainer for me. Check out control-cal for the just released ISF patch if you choose to go that route. This monitor really shines after about 100 HR break-in time, give or take a few hours. I find myself enjoying the picture more as the phosphors age. There are rumored to only be a few hundred of these panels left so get them while you can. In my opinion this monitor will produce a picture superior to all flat panels for the next 2-3 years. By then Panasonic should catch up. The new V10 is a good TV, but doesn't hold a candle to the 500M/600M IMO. No current LCD is even at 7G-8G KURO levels so I will leave them out of the equation. However, I do like the Sony XBR8 LCD for certain applications ($5,000).
Buy this TV over the Samsung LED 8000 series

Review Date: December 3, 2009
Reviewer: Crane Lopes, Washington, D.C.
I have this TV in my living room: 60" plasma, and a brand new Samsung 8000 series TV in my study, 55" LED. The Samsung is an excellent TV - only abount 1" thick and a picture that is clean, sharp and a pleasure to watch. Until you go downstairs and watch the KRP-600M. The KRP-600M is effortlessly jaw-dropping in terms of color, black level and clarity. There is simply no other TV I've seen like it. So, as good as the Samsung LED 8000 is, well the Pioneer KRP-600M is even better. Buy one while they last. You won't regret it.

Worth the Money

Review Date: January 2, 2008
Reviewer: Daren Geremia,
The 5010FD is an elegant television with spectacular HD output and outstanding SD upscaling. I had purchased a top of the line Sony about two years ago, but I was highly disappointed by the atrocious quality of SD signals, which dominated most viewing material at the time. I returned the set and have been waiting for the right combination of technology and programming to purchase another HD TV. I have had the 5010FD for about two months, and I am never disappointed by the picture quality.

I did a great deal of research before deciding on this set: all reviews unequivocally touted the KURO line (both standard and Elite) as the best televisions ever made. Though I am not qualified to corroborate or refute those professional reviews, I can say that I am regularly amazed at the beautiful picture quality and stunning contrast this set can produce. I cannot say if the Elite version is worth the extra money, but I can say that I well pleased with the standard model.

I only have two beefs:
1) The lack of independent RGB adjustment controls (this is available on the Elite version). Though I have adjusted the settings to the best of my ability, reds occasionally appear distractingly brilliant. With much less frequency greens sometimes appear over bright. This is a very minor issue though, and I notice the over saturation vary rarely. IMHO, the pros of this set overwhelmingly outweigh this small con. On this note, do not judge the picture quality of this set if set on Dynmaic mode (the default setting). You should use either Movie mode or the User preset adjusted properly. As with most sets,`torch' mode produces a sickeningly `unreal' picture.

2) The fact that the volume control only controls the set's detachable speakers. It will not control the gain of external RCA outputs, and if I am reading the manual correctly, of the digital out. On that note, I decided to use the TV's speakers for aesthetic reasons (temporarily at least), and I am pretty impressed by their audio quality. It isn't as good as my old surround system, but it does the trick. I will eventually replace them with a new soundbar or surround system, but the built-ins are working very well in the meanwhile.

Two final notes:
1) I was wary to order such an expensive purchase online, but my experience was smooth as silk, and I saved a fortune over purchasing the set locally. The set arrived amazingly fast (2 days after shipping), and it was delivered in excellent shape.

2) My wife was furiously opposed to purchasing a 50" given the smallish nature of our viewing room (we sit about 7-8 feet from the set), but by the end of the week she apologized for treating me ire because I insisted on the 50". She has remarked that the TV is the perfect size for viewing at that distance on several occasions.
Just spend the money

After the contrast went out for the second time on our rear projection 53 inch, it was time to "bite the bullet." After looking at LCD's and plasmas, I decided on the plasma, since I primarily watch sports and the hesitation with the LCD wouldn't work. A friend of mine said that the Pioneer Kuro was the way to go and after all the reviews of the different plasmas, I decided to spend the extra bucks and order the Kuro. It was well worth it. The picture is great and will be even better after I unload Time Warner and get satellite. The price was a bit high but withour tax and shipping, it all worked out. I ordered the TV on November 8th and hoped to have it by Thaksgiving. Amazon said it would be delivered on the 20th. It arrived on the 13th. Darn! I was really impressed by the fact that the delivery driver was supposed to wait until the set produced sound and picture. I released him early and called him later when the set was up and running. I had to install the speakers and download the cable information. I would definitely buy a large electronic purchase from Amazon again and am really impressed with the picture quality and especially the contrast..
Best Picture Ever?

I've been waiting for the right set to come along before replacing my direct view 40" Sony. Picture quality was my highest priority. When I got a chance to view a demo of the new Pioneer Kuro plasmas, I was impressed.

After discussion, test report reviews and a viewing of the set with my wife, we decided to get the 50" non-Elite model. We liked that the speaker bar was located on the bottom of the panel and not the sides and the set came with a table top stand. We have no need for the Home Gallery option or the advanced tweaking that the Elite model offered.

Once it was set up, we were even more impressed with the set. There's plenty of inputs, adequate picture control and as expected, the picture quality is outstanding. The black level is incredible and really makes the colors 'pop' and the contrast is quite good. We have a light controlled room, so we were able to reduce the default light output level from the 'torch' mode to more reasonable levels.

We get our hi-def signals from a rooftop antenna and they look great. I love to fire up my receiver and listen in 5.1 sound when it's available. (Journeyman, The Unit, CSI and Moonlight all have great sound production.)

The digital tuner works well, the remote has 4 direct inputs for favorite channels and the set looks good even when it's off! It's reasonably quick to display a picture when started from the typical standby mode.

My only nits to pick: I don't care for the PIP function, it's awkward to use and not terribly useful, a far cry from the previous Sony set. The channel changes are a bit slow and the display info that accompanies each change lingers too long. The set does run warm in use, but, that's not unusual for a plasma.

Overall, both my wife and I love this set. It's the perfect size for our application. The picture quality is outstanding and is the main reason we bought this set. Though not 'cheap', it's highly recommended.
Pioneer PDP-5010 1080P

The Pioneer PDP-5010 1080P plasma HDTV is awesome. The picture is crystal clear. I read all of the reviews for plasma televisions and Pioneer was rated the best. The reviews are absolutely true. The deep black colors are amazing. Since the blacks are so deep, all of the other colors stand out. This costs more than other plasmas, but it is worth it. The set includes more HDMI and Component inputs than you will probably ever use. Also has a PC input which is great. All of the input slots are in the back or on the side of the television. I like this a lot. This makes the front of the plasma very sleek and pleasing to the eye. This is the best looking plasma that I've seen. My brother has the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U and the looks of the Pioneer are just hands down better. The picture is also a step above the highly rated Panasonic. Picture adjustment of the Pioneer is simple; the on-screen menu is easy to use. I was able to hook the Pioneer remote up to my DVD player and my Time Warner cable box so that I can use just one remote. The television comes attached to the stand, which makes it even easier to start using. The bottom speaker comes detached, but is easy to assemble. If you want the best plasma, I highly recommend the Pioneer PDP 5010.
I am fully satisfied with my purchase from Amazon.com. I ordered the Pioneer on Nov 24th (day after Thanksgiving) and it was delivered on Wednesday Dec. 4th. Its estimated delivery date was Dec 3rd, but the shippers called on the 2nd and told me that it would be delivered on the 4th and gave me a time window for delivery and they came as expected.
Finally, a flat panel HDTV beats my CRT HDTV

Reviewer: M. Wang,
I have been searching for a replacement for my 5-yr old Sony 34" CRT HDTV for years. The search is finally over. My ISF calibrated Sony HDTV has been a great performer. Until recently, it had consistently beaten both LCDs and Plasmas with its excellent black level, outstanding details, accurate color (after ISF calibration fixed its "red push") and lacking of motion blur. But due to the weight of the tube, anything bigger than 34" would be a huge burden.

After months of research and comparison, I finally found it. This Pioneer not only matches all the performance areas that my 34" Sony CRT HDTV has excelled but also adds the "WOW" factor thanks to its considerable bigger screen size. Now I feel I finally step into the picture instead of watching from outside.

The only major downside of this plasma is that the sound quality of TV speakers is nowhere near the quality of picture it delivers. As matter of the fact, it sounds much worse than my 34" Sony CRT TV. So a separate quality sound system is more than a necessity to get full enjoyment from this TV.

Now I only wish that I have more time to watch all my favorite movies on this Big TV again...
